CHINESE SOUL - THE MUSIC BEGINS TO DRAW

In the fall of 2010 Bejing based Jazz musician Werner Fischer-Tian commissioned a website aiming at discretely promoting his new CD 'Chinese Soul'.

With a specifically developed, novel software we succeeded in teaching music to draw. The same software transforms the concerts of the band into multimedia events: animated by the live-sound the sketches are projected onto the walls of the concert hall, sharing an interpretation of the music's content as a visual experience (video).

www.chinese-soul.com went online at the beginning of 2011. The project found international recognition and reached tens of thousands of music lovers around the globe.

THE INNOVATION

Since its inception the visualization of music is an integral part of computer graphics: in intervals of a few hundreths of a second the distribution of the sound pich and volume, the so-called sound-spectrum, is polled and rendered as animated bar chart or some other abstract graph. The technique developed for 'Chinese Soul' makes it possible for the first time to use the sound-spectrum to animate figurative drawings - the music begins to draw. This opens up new expressive and narrative possiblities.

ONE CONCEPT, THREE MEDIA

Soon it became clear that the technique that had initially been developed for the web has big potential for other media too:
